The Mint Julep

The Mint Julep is not merely a cocktail; it is a storied beverage woven into the fabric of American history and culture. Not only consumed by Derby watchers at Churchill Downs and Derby themed parties, But by famed writers and U.S. Presidents alike. It has lent itself to some of our greatest works in print and on screen. The Mint Julep remain a cherished part of American culture and tradition.

Ingredients:

8-10 Fresh mint leaves

.5 oz Demerara Simple Syrup

2 oz Woodford Reserve Bourbon

Crushed ice

Large Sprig of mint (for garnish)

Instructions:

In a julep cup, gently muddle the mint leaves and syrup to release the flavors of the mint.

2. Fill the glass with crushed ice

3. Pour the bourbon over the ice

4. Stir well until the glass becomes frosty

5. Top with crushed ice and create a mound above the rim (KY snow cone)

6. Insert straw to create hole for mint garnish

7. Garnish with a large sprig/bunch of mint in the hole you made with the straw after gently smacking the mint on back of your hand to “waken it up” and add the straw next to mint garnish.
