Set sail with a Rum Old Fashioned...Old Fashioned Week 2024

The subtle sweetness of the Flor De Cana Rum really shines through and the addition of St. Elizabeth's Allspice Dram gives it a touch of fall.

The rise of tiki culture and the popularity of rum-based cocktails in the mid-20th century helped reintroduce rum as a versatile spirit, even in traditionally whiskey-based cocktails like the Old Fashioned.

In the tiki era of the 1940s and 1950s, bartenders like Donn Beach and Victor Jules Bergeron, Jr., more widely known as Trader Vic, popularized rum cocktails, though these were typically more elaborate than the simplicity of the Old Fashioned. It wasn't until the cocktail renaissance of the early 21st century, with a renewed interest in both classic cocktails and high-quality rum, that the Rum Old Fashioned began to appear more regularly on bar menus.

Today, the Rum Old Fashioned is a staple in craft cocktail bars, thanks to its simplicity and the wide range of rum flavors—from light and dry to dark and aged—that can be used to create different variations of the drink. Bartenders may use aged rums, which have flavor profiles similar to whiskey, or experiment with spiced and flavored rums to add complexity.
